Central regional forensic community mental health service

This service is for people who have been involved in the criminal justice system who are moving toward receiving general mental health care or being discharged from a forensic mental health service. The service covers the Wellington, Manawatu-Whanganui, Hawke's Bay and Tairāwhiti regions.

Services we provide

The central regional forensic community mental health service provides expert advice about people with serious mental health conditions in a variety of settings including:

  • prisons
  • courts
  • specialised inpatient units
  • the community.

The service works closely with the justice system to provide assessment, and treatment and rehabilitation services for people with mental health conditions including:

  • offenders or alleged offenders
  • rangatahi who pose a high risk of offending.

We have forensic adult community teams based near:

  • the courts in the main cities in each district
  • the 5 prisons in the central North Island.

We have forensic youth community teams based near:

  • youth courts
  • youth offending units
  • youth justice residential centres.

Referral information

Adults may be referred to us from:

  • a forensic inpatient mental health service
  • prison.

Rangatahi may be referred to our forensic youth team from:

  • a forensic inpatient mental health service
  • a youth justice facility or youth offending unit.
