Harmful algal blooms in Pareora River/ Pureora at Pareora Huts

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora has lifted its harmful algal bloom health warnings issued for the Pareora River/ Pureora at Pareora Huts and the Waihao River at Gum Tree Flat Rd (Don’s Hole).

Recent cyanobacteria surveys of the Pareora River/ Pureora at Pareora Huts have shown the cover of potentially toxic harmful algae (benthic cyanobacteria) has reduced and is now below levels that are of concern to public health.>

Dr Annabel Begg, Medical Officer of Health for the National Public Health Service, says Environment Canterbury’s monitoring of Pareora River/ Pureora at Pareora Huts and Waihao River at Gum Tree Flat Rd (Don’s Hole) will resume next summer when there is increased likelihood of cyanobacteria growth.
