Diabetes — Wellington, Hutt and Kapiti
Diabetes is a long-term condition caused by too little production of the hormone insulin (type 1 diabetes) or a combination of this and the body's resistance to the insulin (type 2 diabetes). The diabetes services are based at Wellington Regional Hospital, Hutt Valley Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital and Kapiti Health Centre. They help people of all ages with either type.

Diagnosing and treating diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes:
- type 1 diabetes
- type 2 diabetes.
We see people with both types, as well as some less common causes.
You may have a number of tests to check:
- whether you have diabetes (and what type)
- monitor your treatment and manage your condition.
Health professionals work together in our diabetes and endocrine service to treat people and support healthcare provider to manage diabetes in the community.
All types of diabetes are treated with a combination of:
- diet
- exercise
- medications.

Medical clinics
Specialist diabetes medical clinics work with high risk populations to prevent development of diabetes complications and help patients manage their condition.
High risk populations include:
- diabetes in pregnancy
- renal and cancer patients who have diabetes.
Community management and support nursing service
This specialist service works with healthcare providers in our region supporting them to manage complex cases.
Diabetes research
Our diabetes research centre runs clinical trials.
These trials:
- look at new medications for type 1 and type 2 diabetes
- study the effects of diet and lifestyle choices and surgery for obesity on health.
