Colposcopy clinics — Canterbury
If your cervical screen test shows an abnormal result, you may be referred to colposcopy for assessment and examination. This involves a vaginal and cervical examination with a speculum and a close look at the cervix with a colposcope.

Services we provide
You will be referred to colposcopy if you:
- have had HPV 16/18 detected
- have had HPV other detected twice and you are over 50
- have had HPV other detected 3 times and you are under 50
- have had cytology screening that is ASC-H or greater
- are immunosuppressed with a result of HPV other.
The colposcopy department provides:
- colposcopy assessment
- treatment of abnormal cervical cells
- post-treatment follow up.
Lletz treatments are completed in our outpatient clinic under a local anaesthetic. Sometimes a general anaesthetic is recommended. You will have this done in the operating theatre. Appointments are in high demand.
You are welcome to bring whānau or other support people to your appointment.

Women can be referred to colposcopy services by:
- Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa
- healthcare providers such as GPs and nurses
- sexual health clinics
- Christchurch Women's Prison.
