Causes of a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus sensation)

The exact cause is unknown. It can be a symptom of:

  • acid reflux
  • the muscles around the top of your food pipe not working normally
  • psychological stress
  • inflammation of the throat.

Symptoms of a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus sensation)

The main symptom is the feeling of a lump in your throat. The sensation is usually felt in front of the neck. It might also be felt as tightness or pressure. There is usually no pain associated with it.

It does not affect eating and drinking, and often comes and goes. It is felt mostly when you swallow saliva only.

Globus sensation is different from swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). If you have difficulty swallowing, you need to see your healthcare provider immediately.

Diagnosing a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus sensation)

Your healthcare provider can usually diagnose you based on your symptoms and an examination of your throat.

If they are concerned, your healthcare provider may refer you to an ear, nose and throat specialist (otolaryngologist). They will look down your throat with a flexible telescope that is passed down your nose. This is called a laryngoscopy.

Treating a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus sensation)

You usually do not need any treatment. An examination of your symptoms and reassurance from your healthcare provider that there is no serious underlying problem may be all that is required.

If you have a condition that could be making the globus worse, your healthcare provider may give you some medication. This could include tablets for stomach acid reflux or a nasal spray for postnasal drip.
