Donating items

Our Matatiki children's health service gratefully accepts new toys and arts and craft items. Our neonatal unit has an ongoing need for clothing and bedding.

Gifted toys and art supplies are given to children while in hospital or used in the activity room where children as inpatients can spend time playing and engaging with hospital play specialists.

Note: For the safety of our patients, we are only able to accept donations that are brand new and recently purchased.

You can schedule a time to drop off a donation Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm by emailing ChildHealthWebsite@cdhb.health.nz

Requirements for neonatal clothing and bedding

Our neonatal intensive care has an ongoing need for clothing and bedding. New cotton singlets, gowns or baby grows are always gratefully accepted. Knitted items such as singlets, cardigans and blankets are also items in need. We are happy to receive used single or double woollen blankets which are cut down to bassinet size.

Knitted clothing

  • Sizes 14 inch (35cm) and 16 inch (40cm)
  • Cardigans - loose cuffs, set in sleeves or generous raglan sleeves
  • No cords or ribbons around necks

Baby grows

  • Prefer domes
  • If zips, they must open from both ends

Blankets and quilts

  • Design: knitted wool closest to the baby is the first layer with crochet blankets on the outer layer or a quilt. Although pure wool is the gold standard, we will accept acrylic mix as well because the NICU is a warm environment and babies are not going outside
  • Quilts: cotton with thin batting, no puffy fillers

Waikato Health Trust

Waikato Health Trust

The broad purpose of the Waikato Health Trust is to support the provision of health and disability services within the area served by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato.

The Waikato Health Trust (WHT) is an incorporated charitable trust. One of its main activities is to manage the donations and bequests received by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato. Under an arrangement between Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato and the trust all donations and bequests received by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato are passed to the trust. They are then spent strictly in accordance with the donor's wishes.

This arrangement gives donors confidence that any conditions they may wish to attach to their donation will be respected. It also enables donations to benefit from the tax advantages of a charitable trust as well as maximising returns by allowing funds to be pooled.

Making a donation

The Waikato Health Trust welcomes donations and bequests to support the provision of health and disability services within the area served by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato.

Such donations can be tagged in any way the donor considers appropriate. For example, a donor may wish to support:

  • a particular hospital or ward
  • a particular area of research
  • a particular locality.

The funds are managed accordingly and no administration or overhead fees (except online donation transaction fees) are deducted so every dollar you donate is used for the for the intended purpose.

Waikato Hospital Arts Committee

Waikato Hospital Arts Committee

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato staff are passionate about the role art plays in healthcare environments.

Waikato has built up an extensive art collection from numerous artists in each of its hospitals through donation or purchase.

Well selected and appropriately placed artwork has a positive impact on wellness and wellbeing. Decorating hospitals with specific types of artwork can speed up a patient's healing process, shorten hospital stays and help manage pain.

The Waikato Hospital Arts Committee was established to monitor the acquisition of art, by making sure every piece donated adds value to the current collection.

If you are passionate about art like we are and would like to assist the committee in raising funds for this programme, your donation and or support would be greatly appreciated. The alternative to donating art is to donate money towards buying a piece of art.

Help our Waikids

Help our Waikids

New Zealanders, especially our tamariki and rangatahi, are fortunate to benefit from a free to low cost public health system. But there’s not a limitless pot of funding for some of the items needed to provide care.

We have over 900 patients in Waikato Hospital on any given day. If you are in hospital that means you are really unwell or seriously injured. Some of the whānau who need care sadly don't have much at all.

Around 25% of Waikato's people live in deprivation. A nice new teddy bear or a colouring book could be the difference they need to get through life-saving surgery. A warm pair of PJs and something to keep their feet cosy, like a simple pair of socks, could be the difference in keeping them safe when they get the chance to leave hospital.

We’ve put this page together to help you make a thoughtful gift idea that suits you or your team and helps our Waikids.

Donating to Waikids

Safety first — check to see if your gift or kind donation is suitable.

We welcome a range of items to help us provide recreational activities and celebrate special events.

However, there are strict hygiene and safety criteria which need to be followed to protect unwell children from cross infection and outside germs.

  • We respectfully ask that no second hand stuffed toys be donated. Soft toys are extremely hard to keep sterile and clean.
  • Good condition plastic toys can be accepted if they are safe and can withstand a robust cleaning process or can be wiped with an anti-septic wipe.
  • Books, toys, portable DVDs and CDs are great distractions but please ensure they are in good condition.
  • For celebrations we can only accept new and unwrapped gifts.
  • Unfortunately we cannot accept any food items as gifts since some children have food allergies or follow special diets.

Checklist for donations

  • Is it clean?
  • Is it in good condition?
  • Can I post or deliver it to the hospital myself? (We are not able to pick up items.)
  • See our wish list for donations of new helpful items to support children in hospital.

If we cannot accept a gift you were considering, we ask you consider other organisations that support children but do not face the same health risks as Waikato Hospital.

For many years, a small and dedicated group has been collecting equipment, books, documents, photographs, uniforms and the like in a bid to preserve rare and interesting material about the history of health, for the benefit of future generations.

In 2005, the work of this group was formalised under the banner of the Waikato Health Memorabilia Trust, which is a Registered Charitable Trust with the Charities Commission (No. CC 10234).

The trust organises public meetings and lectures and annual memorial lectures on topics of interest.
