The Department of Anaesthesia is a very active unit, providing services to one of the largest single site hospitals in New Zealand. The Anaesthesia team at Waikato Hospital has a strong track record in teaching, continuing medical education and research, and aims to be a centre of anaesthetic excellence in New Zealand.

The team performs over 23,000 anaesthetic procedures per year in all tertiary surgical specialties.
In mid-2013, 10 new operating theatres opened at Waikato Hospital, providing additional facilities for the department and a growth in its functions. This brings the total number of theatres to 22.

Continuing medical education

In addition to a monthly meeting (morbidity and mortality, education session and department business meeting), a monthly evening journal club is hosted in the home of a Consultant.
The Waikato Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre provides regular anaesthesia crisis training sessions as well as NZ Resuscitation Council courses.
The organisation is committed to provision of CME leave and allowances as per by the MECA.
