Taumarunui Hospital is a rural secondary level hospital that serves the Taumarunui borough (more than 4,500 residents) and wider King Country areas (more than 11,800 residents).

It is a small hospital with a 24 hour emergency department, maternity unit / birthing rooms, laboratory, radiology and outpatient clinics, plus inpatient (ward) area. 
More specialised services are offered through outreach services using Waikato Hospital specialists, or patients are sent to Waikato Hospital, which is a two hour drive. There is a free bus service available for patients to attend appointments at Waikato Hospital.

The services provided at Taumarunui Hospital include:

  • Emergency Department providing 24 hour care for people with serious illness or injury.
  • X-ray and laboratory services for seriously ill patients 24/7 and for planned hospital visits Monday to Friday.
  • Inpatient unit with 10 ward beds for medical patients. In addition there is one youth bed, one palliative bed and four maternity beds.
  • Whanau house for emergency accommodation for families of inpatients.
  • Mobile surgical services that visit once every six weeks and provide minor surgical services.
  • Outpatient clinics - about 2,700 people visit outpatient clinics each year for a wide range of services including orthopaedics, medicine, surgery, paediatrics and women’s health.
  • Taumarunui Hospital also offers a cafeteria, patient lounge, chaplaincy services, if needed.

In addition the following Waikato DHB services are located at Taumarunui:

  • Family Health Team and Allied Health community services from the Taumarunui Hospital campus including  physiotherapists, occupational therapists, district nurses, social workers, diabetes nurse, dietitian and public health nurses work in the community and provide services on referral from GPs, hospital and other health care providers.
  • Rural Mental Health Services are based at Kokiri Trust, Hakiaha Street, Taumarunui and provide services to Taumarunui and the surrounding areas.

Taumarunui maternity unit is a primary birthing facility for natural, low-risk births under lead maternity carer (LMC) midwifery care.
